This is an open comment discussion about the topic for our next show: “Hyperion: Astounding or Confounding?”

Yes, there’s backstory on this one, which I’ll go into in the show. But we’re now open for discussion: what did you think of Dan Simmons’ Hyperion? Not the entire saga, just the first book, on its own.

Give a listen to our Intro Show, and keep an eye open on the website for an open thread to discuss the topic of the upcoming Show #1.

Download KAMN Show #000.

I’m still working on the FeedBurner/LibSyn stuff for subscriptions, but be assured, all that will be set up before Show #1 goes live.

I’d also like to send a special thanks to Joel Veitch and his band, 7 Seconds of Love, for allowing us to to use Flip Out Like A Ninja as our theme song. Head on over there and take a look at the animated video, as well as listen to the long version of the song.

Take the Firefly quiz, and discover Which Firefly crewmember are you?

I took the quiz twice, came up 70% Jayne on the first one, and 70% Zoe on the second one. And yes, I do think that’s hi-larious.

Post-Con Report

It was a long weekend, but I can’t complain… the guys definitely stayed up longer than I did all weekend. But they were camped out 5 minutes away, while I had to truck it about 35 minutes away, which isn’t very conducive to the drinking and partying all night long.

I will not have that problem at World Fantasy Con in Madison WI this coming November, since I am still hopeful of getting a hotel room there.

It was great putting faces to many of the names I already knew, and meeting new ones as well. Kade from the alienEthOS podcast was a blast, and since he’s local I’m guessing we’ll be hearing a lot more from him, possibly on Wingin’ It, Slice of SciFi, and maybe even KAMN.

Who else showed up that said “Hi”?

Panels?

by Joe
September 9, 2005, 7:53 am | In Ninja News | 2 Comments

Yeah, funny thing about the panels. About a week or so ago, I realized I hadn’t actually let anyone at CopperCon know I was coming, or that I was available for panels. By then it was too late, so I’m going as a guest.

That kinda makes me a doofus, cause now I’s gotsta pay to get in, but my schedule is wide open, so that’s good.

Now if I can just manage to find out where the hotel is, I’ll be in like Flin.

Serenity Fan project

September 9, 2005, 7:24 am | In Fandom, Movies | 2 Comments

Done the Impossible is a fan project by the creators of SerenityMovie.net that tells the story of the Firefly fans… a film about the Browncoats.

Firefly has grown beyond just the genius of Joss Whedon — just as he intended it to. In many ways the words Firefly and Browncoat have come to symbolize a sense of community, family, and believing that the impossible can be accomplished. These concepts are at the very heart of Firefly and of its fans.

In this documentary, the fans explain what inspired them to become passionate about Firefly, to help save Firefly, attend shindigs, participate in message boards, donate to charities, and become Serenity extras. They talk about the many ways that Firefly has affected their lives. Cast and crew also share humorous and insightful experiences with the fans.

The project was shot in hi-def, and will be available November 2005, and a percentage of the proceeds will go to Joss Whedon’s favorite charity, Equality Now.

Pre-orders placed before September 15th receive a 33% discount from the retail price.

Mosquito, a Firefly spoofing fan film which debuted last week at Dragon*Con, is now available for download at MosquitoVerse.

Any D*C attendees see this already? I heard indirectly that it was very well-received…

CopperCon Sightings

by Summer
September 8, 2005, 11:00 pm | In Ninja News | 1 Comment

Attention: Repeat Information Dissemination approaching. You may experience some turbulence.

CopperCon is in North Phoenix this year, and it’s actually almost walking distance from the Draco Vista Studios.

I’ll be appearing on 3 panels this year, 2 on Friday (one on Serenity and one on Podcasting), and one on Sunday (one on young adult speculative fiction other than Harry Potter. I have a list…).

I’ll also be wandering about the place, taking in a few other panels, hoping to catch up with some authors I know, and even helping out at the AZ Browncoats table if I’m able.

I’m not sure which panels Joe made it onto, but maybe he’ll post something here letting folks know his CopperCon schedule. hint, hint

If you’re around and see either of us, say Hi.

Hmmm… wonder if we need to come up with some sort of Kick-Ass Mystic Ninja Network greeting for just such occassions.

Shhhh….

One step closer to a podcast: we have a theme song.

I can’t tell y’all yet, because that would all sorts of spoil the surprise.

Where are those crazy kids?

Andrew asked in comments where he could have found the DP crew at Dragon*Con last weekend.

Michael and Evo were wandering about the place, but because they registered late, they weren’t able to make it onto any panels.

Unfortunately, the KAMN were not in attendance at D*C, but all of us will be around this coming weekend at CopperCon 25.

I’m participating on 3 panels; a Serenity panel Friday at 3pm, a Podcasting panel with Evo, Mike and Tee Morris Friday at 4pm, and a young-adult speculative fiction panel Sunday at 2pm.

I think the Sunday panel will be awesome, as the topic is “What else is out there besides Harry Potter”, and you know how I can get about getting folks to read good stuff they may not have ever heard about.

So if you’re around Phoenix this weekend, stop by and say “Hi!”

Great Book - Great Price

by Joe
September 5, 2005, 8:59 pm | In Books | 5 Comments

The fourth book in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Feast for Crows, is coming out this November. (Finally!)

If you like epic fantasy, and you haven’t read this series, you can remedy this character flaw by getting the first book at a reduced price. A Game of Thrones is now available for only $3.99!

If you’re unfamiliar with this series, imagine Lord of the Rings, or The Wheel of Time, written for grown-ups. If you’re tired of reading stories where you know the good guys will all live and the bad guys will get what’s coming to them, this is the series for you.

If you like Robert Jordan, you’ll love George R. R. Martin. If you hate Robert Jordan, you’ll still love George R. R. Martin.

Serenity Viral Marketing

The 5th and reportedly final video in the Serenity viral marketing campaign has been released, and although we’re not listed yet, the KAMN are hosting a mirror of it in our Special Features section.

Salty goodness.

Another Cult?

by Summer
September 4, 2005, 6:36 pm | In Ninja News | 6 Comments

I… got nothin’.

I’m flattered… truly. I just don’t know what I’d do with a cult.

I don’t have any aspirations of world domination or anything like that. Maybe spreading truth, justice, and the strength of individuality, perhaps… but these rumors of Evo being a false geek definitely came out of deep left field, especially seeing as how Joe already proclaimed himself a Terranary. He may even be Evo’s High Priest, but I don’t know for sure.

Anyway, all of this could be an interesting discussion for our first show. I also have some other ideas for the show, and I hope we’ll get to discuss them in between conventions if we have a moment to catch a breather.
