The book under discussion in our 3rd show will be Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny.

Most people know of the Amber series by Zelazny, but fewer know about this stand-alone fantasy. David Moldawer will be joining Joe and I to talk shop about this book, since he’s the Zelazny guru amongst us.

Feel free to throw in comments, or points you might like to hear us talk about, if you’re already familiar with the book.

  1. I read this for the first time about three years ago. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, especially given it’s reputation as a classic. Was it an allegory clothed in SF, a literal interpretation of Earth’s major religions, transported to a distant world - or something in between?

What I remember I liked about it: The resurrected army of Christians, undead things shambling to the battlefield. The suggestion that the gods were merely astronauts who were able to manipulate the environment of the planet to establish their godhead.

Especially the tale where Sam goes to tame the demons, finds himself possessed and committing atrocities and engaging in a hedonistic lifestyle - except his fight against the demon possessor takes years, and manifests itself to the demon as despair and boredom with his actions, rather than a dramatic wresting of power.

Looks like I’ll have to go re-read this one…

  2. FYI for those who’ve been waiting, this show will go out the week of Dec 4th, and we are trying to work out a regular schedule for show releases.

It’s a new show, and we have bugs still :)

  3. Great choice for a novel to review. Zelazny really caught my attention with this tale of love, betrayal and technology vs. culture. I’ve always wondered where we would be if there was a zig instead of a zag in the way technology was applied. My fav part is the conversation between the two neighbors about “smells”. Of course, I’v always longed for a prequel to this about the war with the demons and the Mothers of the Glow. Hmmm….
