Show #12: Pre-show Discussion

The topic of discussion for Show #12 will be the 1976 film Logan’s Run.

Yes, it’s based on the William F. Nolan & George Clayton Johnson novel, but I’ve never read it. And yes, there was a short-lived TV series in 1977 starring Gregory Harrison and Heather Menzies (14 episodes), but I never saw it.

If anyone has read the book or seen the tv show, I’d love to hear your impressions.

Welcome to Show #11!

This week, we discuss Dune, the 1965 Frank Herbert novel that continues to have an impact on the way people think about science fiction.

The Ninjas also cover the theatrical movie (several different versions of it), and the more recent SciFi Channel miniseries treatment of the book. Listen to their varied opinions on the creative interpretations.

Also, courtesy of Jesse Willis, SFF Audio has listed a large number of available audiobook options for Dune novels. Thanks, Jesse and Scott… the work you guys have done was in a way an inspiration for the creation of this show.

Free TV downloads available

We’ve been talking about AOL and Time Warner’s new broadband video collaboration, In2TV quite a bit over at The Babylon Podcast, simply because they are making the entire series available for free download.

However, there are some other shows that might be of interest to the KAMN audience: The Adventures of Brisco County Jr, Pinky and the Brain, the animated Beetlejuice, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Wonder Woman, V, La Femme Nikita, and for me (whoo-hoo), Spenser: For Hire.

Yes, I was an Avery Brooks fan long before he became captain of a space station. The Federation uniform does nothing for me, but seeing him in a leather jacket and shades, and in a black on black luxury muscle sedan… damn.

Anyway, we’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback on the quality of the Babylon 5 episodes, so I’m guessing it’d be the same for most of the other series (especially the ones already available on DVD). So head over there and see if there’s anything you’d like to watch for free.

One drawback: their viewing and download system only works with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10, but in an interview with a VP of AOL Video (who’s a Mac guy to boot), he’s said that they hope to have this working for Mac users in the future.

Welcome to Show #10!

This week, we discuss the 1985 fantasy Ladyhawke. Is it a cult classic, or is it something else entirely?

The Ninjas spark up a lively talk about the story, the attention to detail in the locations, and perhaps that not enough attention was given to the soundtrack.

In order to give everyone enough time to brush up, we’re also announcing the show topic for Show #11, which we’ll be recording on March 26.

It’s Dune, boys and girls!

We’re going to talk about the book that started it all, the David Lynch movie, and the SciFi Channel miniseries. So now you’ve got a couple weeks to slog through all that and send us any questions or comments you might want to hear us address during our discussion.

New York Times Science Fiction Book Reviewer

I’m incredibly pleased to discover that the New York Times has finally deigned to form a science fiction book review column. This is long overdue: Science fiction, as we all know, is just as valid a literary form as any other. The first review (link) is of David Marusek’s Counting Heads. You may recall that I reviewed that worthy book myself on the Dragon Page (link).

This is good news, I think. Science fiction’s already conquered television and film. It’s time that the brilliant books that provide all the source material and new ideas for those mostly lousy blockbuster films finally get a little respect.

For Show #10, we head back to the film vaults and pull Ladyhawke off the dusty shelves.

A cult classic fantasy starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick, we have a tale of true love thwarted by dark magics, a power struggle between a Bishop and his former captain of the guard, and a journey where a brash thief becomes a reluctant hero.

It’s medieval France with damned few accents and an electronic rock soundtrack by the Alan Parsons Project!

What more could you ask for?

update: yes, Roger, you are correct. Jeez, I’ve been thinking all these years that it was Toto because it was such a poor fit for the movie! Scary thing is, there are copies of the soundtrack on eBay for $55 and more.
