Summer, Joe and David are joined by the one and only Jack Mangan in a lively discussion about the 1996 Bruce Sterling novel, Holy Fire.

The Ninjas share their varied thoughts and impressions about the story, and argue a bit on whether there really was a story somewhere underneath the bombardment of concepts and ideas.

Aaron from the Weekly Anime Review has a review of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, a Japanese TV show from 1993, for us this time around.

Show #15: Pre-show Discussion

Some of you guys have asked that we post show topic books and DVDs as early as possible, to give you enough time to read them or see them before the show. We try to oblige.

The book topic for Show #15 will go back a little farther. We’ll be reading More than Human by Theodore Sturgeon, an International Fantasy Award winner in 1953.

Show #14: Pre-show Discussion

The topic for Show #14 will be the 1980 film Flash Gordon, starring Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, and Max von Sydow.

What I’ve discovered about the DVD for this film is that it’s out of print, and therefore a highly priced collectible at Amazon. How does this movie go out of print?

Also, if you can find it, check out Flash Gordon: Space Soldiers, the 1936 Buster Crabbe serial that started the Hollywood fascination with Flash.

Site Updates

As you may have noticed, you can now preview the shows through your web browser in addition to still being able to downlaod them.

The show should also play nicer with iTunes, now that all the iTunes specific fields and keywords are filled in by the new plugin.

The calendar is operational, but still being populated with information. I should have it linked in later today.

Also, don’t forget… if you’re coming to the shows late and have missed the open comment thread windows, feel free to hop on over to the Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas Forums to continue your discussions.

KAMN Recording Schedule

You all asked for it, and it’s being worked on.

I’m going to be putting up a calendar for Ninjas shows almost exactly like the Slice of SciFi calendar. It’s going to have our recording schedule (which is normally every other week), and it’ll have a breakdown of what topics we’ll be talking about when.

This will give everyone time to know what we’ll be talking about, and to go pick up said book or DVD beforehand. Hopefully, this will get us a lot more suggestions and questions in the Pre-show Discussion threads.

I will have to upgrade the version of WordPress that’s running on the website first, so don’t be alarmed if when you stop by later today things are out of order or just plain not working at all for a few minutes. Hopefully, it’ll just be flipped over, and no one will even notice… because that’s what ninjas do.

Original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD

The original Star Wars Trilogy to be released on DVD

No, Brad, I actually had no idea this was happening. Can’t you tell from listening to the show that I don’t really know much of anything about science fiction? Summer and Joe knew all about it, I’m sure, but I rely on helpful listeners like you to keep me abreast.

That’s wonderful news, though. I’d heard that Lucas had no intention of ever doing this. It’ll be a real treat to watch Star Wars the way it was meant to be seen, with Han shooting first and no stupid T-Rex’s lumbering around in the back of every crowd scene.

Heat Vision and Jack

Listener Brian sent us the following tip:

I thought you guys might want to see this pilot for a show spoofing Knight Rider and other similar classic scifi shows. It stars Jack Black as a NASA astronaut on the run with his talking motorcycle companion voiced by Owen Wilson.

Although the show would not be appropriate for a full KAMN podcast, I figured you and your listeners would enjoy this.
