Show #15 Delayed

Once again, technical difficulties have arisen to bite us, or rather me, in the ass.

Audacity sucks for use on a Mac, is all I can conclude. It works just fine when I record at 22050, but since many newer devices want 44100 I went to 44100, and I have yet to be able to record successfully at that rate.

You’d think it wouldn’t make a difference with enough RAM and free disk space, but so far, I haven’t been able to save anything over 30 minutes long in Audacity at the higher rate.

So, half of this week’s conversation about More Than Human (specifically, my half) is lost forever. We will either re-record the show, or I’ll figure out a way to make it a coherent discussion between just David and Joe.

In the mean time, I’m going to immerse myself in Garage Band to try to figure it out, and gleefully rip the piece of trash named Audacity off of my hard drives.

  1. I havent used it but the newest version of Garage Band is supposed to have a pretty good podcasting mode.

  2. It’s always a matter of when, not if, Audacity will screw you. Be warned - GB can do something similar but I’ve only heard of it when there isn’t adequate disk space.

I’d follow Rob Walch’s advice and get the recording off of the computer. You’ve got an iRiver. Use AudioHijack Pro to send every input you want out of your line out jack and onto the iRiver. You can even monitor as it goes in. No crashing.

  3. Wow, that sucks bigtime.

On the positive side, I just started the book last night, so more time for me to finish it!

  4. I’ll have to play with the iRiver concoction again, but the last time I tried it, I recorded my end with the iRiver and used Hijack to record the Skype end, and my end sounded weird (swimmy, is the best description I can think if for it).

Maybe it’s just a matter of playing with the iRiver settings.

  5. Sounds like Audacity is about to get a free boot to the head.
