Show #27: Pre-show Discussion

Whoops! This is going out a little later than I'd planned, but not to worry, it's an easy one.

The Ninjas plus guests will be discussing Highlander, the 1986 Russell Mulcahy feature film. Chock full of mythic heroes and villains, and an abundance of swordplay, this movie not only spawned a successful and fun TV series spinoff, but it's achieved "classic" status. We may even touch on the series a little bit, but it all depends on how caught up we get talking about the movie.

And remember, there can be only one. Movie. No, seriously... those other movies? Never happened.

Comments

  1. Ah a true classic. That imortal line (pun intended) "There Can Be Only One." has always held sway for me. Thus those "other" films are deleted from my memory.

My Mom says there's actually another cut of the 2nd one out there that's not that bad. I'll have to ask her about it because I really can't remember what she said was different, but IIRC she says that what ended up turning that movie into what it was was probably some kid with a business degree who thought "well, if these unwashed uneducated common idiots can make a movie, I with my master in accounting can do it too."

This is why it totally sucks that heads of studios these days are rarely people who've actually been IN the "business" as it were of film making.

IIRC, it's technically called the "Renegade Version," though it's
also referred to as the Director's Cut :-) . IN fact, Amazon has it as
"Highlander 2 - Renegade Version (The Director's Cut)".

Reading through the reviews, this still gets mixed reactions,
including one person who misses Planet Ziest (shrugs). Still, the
customer reviews give it better than the "spotlight" ones. It's hard
to tell, though, since they used the same reviews on the 109 min.
Special Edition as the 138 min. Renegade Version, though they have
different content. I hate when Amazon mixes things up like that.

There should probably still have been only one, but IMO this one's a
lot better than the original, even if it's not great. Worth at least
one watch, but if we ever decide to buy it, we'll look for it used.

Oh yeah, I know about the "Renegade Version", but it still doesn't improve on the story from the first movie.

And don't get me started on how the TV series added to the timeline mess :)

  5. Matt says:

Brian, your Mom is so cool

  6. Brian says:

Nerd runs in the family. ;-)
