This is one of my all time favorites. This and the Prequel "Deepness in the Sky". To me putting it down halfway through was not an option - Fire Upon the Deep is non-stop action!

The way Vinge flicks between two groups of protagonists - one in a Space-Opera race-against-time and a second group, children trapped in a pseudo-medeval war - is just breathtaking. When you add to the the way in which he chucks around philosophies like softballs and you don't get a minute to rest.

The different species (animal, vegetable, mineral and other) are pretty smegging inventive - software dieties and buggy-riding houseplants...

Seriously hope you ninjas like this one.

Oooooo! I'm looking forward to your discussion of this one. I'm a big fan of space opera, and this is a modern classic, complete with truly alien aliens (the Tines), ancient threats awoken, and thought provoking high concepts.
