KAMN Show #30: Galactic Patrol

Welcome to Show #30!

Summer, David and special guest Tim Callender (host of The Babylon Podcast) gather ’round to discuss “Galactic Patrol”, the original first novel of E. E. “Doc” Smith’s “Lensman” space opera series.

Sorry about the audio quality. We’re still trying to figure the problem out.

Feature Discussion: Tim and David give an overview of the book and the plot summaries, while Summer saves most of her commentary for the later dissection of the storytelling style. It’s an engaging space-faring adventure, although it’s easy to see how the writing style could make it harder for those more sophisticated reading tastes to easily become lost in the story if they’re reading them for the first time. It’s very easy to see how the non-stop action and occassionally sparse descriptions would appeal to the intended scifi demographic, the 14-year-old male.

It’s also very easy to step back and see how themes and plot devices from this series influenced later stories, from Star Wars to Babylon 5 to Green Lantern and many more.

Consumer warning: avoid the anime interpretation. Seriously.

Promotional Notes: David’s pop culture show, Moldawer in the Morning, is a new member of the FarPoint Media Network!

The next KAMN show will cover the 1982 paranormal/horror classic “Poltergeist”. Directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg, it’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since this film first made moviegoers wonder a little differently about whether or not that item you placed on the counter did or didn’t move when you weren’t looking at it…

If you have a promo you’d like us to play, send it or send a link to it to us!

Listener Feedback: Give us some! You can leave comments here for the show, or at the Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas Forum. If you want to leave a voicemail comment on anything we’ve discussed, you can call us at 206-666-5266.

  1. Aww come on guys, the Lensman anime was fascinating to watch for how far it deviated from the original storyline. Hard to believe really. It has to be watched at least once for the WTF factor. :)

  2. No, there has to be a disclaimer.

No one should encourage anyone to endure that sort of pain without full disclosure of what the potential viewer is *truly* getting themselves into.

    :)

  3. nah, Philip- I looked at some stills I found online, and that’s all it took for me to know that the whole thing was more like a bad Star Wars ripoff than anything resembling Lensmen.

I’d love to see a Lensmen miniseries on SFC - that could be fun.

  4. If not for the sound quality (good luck fixing it, I know how much sound problems can suck) I’d forward this to my Mom. She loves that series and has tried to get me to read it. It’s on my list, but I have a HUGE backlog and NO time thanks to college and haivng to work 4 closing shifts a week at Pizza Hut.

  5. Guys, I would love to listen to this and I tried but its unlistenable due to the sound. Instant headache and its way too bad for the car stereo.

Any chance you could rescue this or redo it. I’m sure Mike could work his magic?

    Can’t you guys record together?

  6. I love your show and usually I enjoy listen to this but this time it was pure horror. Sound was so warp to the point that it was completely unintelligible especially to me because English is not my native language.
I sure hope that you repost this show this time properly.

  7. No, we can’t record together because Dave lives in NYC, and his availability doesn’t fit with any times that Brian, Tim or myself can be in studio.

Maybe I just need to bow out of the show and let the guys run with it, since it is my connection that’s screwing the whole ballgame.

I have also asked Mike to listen to the show, and let me know if there’s anything to be done. Worse comes to worse, I can just pull this show completely, and maybe we can redo it later.

  8. Noooo Summer don’t go !!! sure the sound in the last issue was up to shit but you sounded great the show needs you. With out you it’s just two geek guys yaking on. We (Meaning I) love the dulcet sounds of Summer. Pull Galactic Patrol and Redo (Only Tim’s audio was the problem).

Was the episode cut short or something because it seemed to just stop in the middle.

  9. Hey, Ninjas, faithful listener Botar here.
The problem I had with Show #30 was that it was only
about 26 minutes long and not the 1:09 that the
website advertised. All versions I tried (through
my iTunes subscription or directly from your website) cut off right in the middle of the show! Can the complete show be posted?

    Comment by Botar — June 8, 2007 #

  10. I goofed. :)

Mike remastered the original show as best he could, and uploaded it as the same filename, while I was creating a post with a new filename.

So I changed the filename to the new name that I was going to use in the repost, but I hadn’t disabled the player in the old post yet.

Please see the KAMN repost for the updated show… it’s still sounds like a scratchy record, but the other effects should be gone.
