KAMN Show #35: Near Dark
by SummerDecember 20, 2007, 5:00 am | In Shows |
Welcome to Show #35!
Feature Discussion: David, Brian and Summer chat about the 1987 cult feature Near Dark, written by Eric Red and Kathryn Bigelow, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, starring Adrian Pasdar, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein and Tim Thomerson, and featuring a soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.
The Ninjas talk about this not-too-widely known vampire film with both a wild west and a romantic twist in it. The second twist comes from the fact that the word “vampire” is never once uttered during the entire movie… not by the immortals, and the victims don’t really stick around long enough to be able to say it either.
Did you know that Kathryn Bigelow is planning a remake/reimagining of Near Dark? We didn’t, but an IMDb listing is rarely wrong… it’s still In Development, so no public details are available yet.
For those of you with premium movie channels, Near Dark will be airing on TMC on December 24, 2007. Check your local listings, and have some fun. But for some real fun, definitely check out the 2-disc DVD set… the bonus features are almost as long as the feature itself.
Listener Feedback: Give us some! You can leave comments here for the show, or at the Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas Forum. If you want to leave a voicemail comment on anything we’ve discussed, you can call us at 206-666-5266.

Phew, it’s not just me. Yeah, the last 38 minutes of the show have been cut off. Love Near Dark though

When you fix it, PLEASE do a repost in the XML feed - iTunes won’t properly handle the fixed download. (so you’ll dump the old one and make the new one Near Dark (repost) or something like that - PRETTY PLEASE!!!

Son of a…
RapidEye, there is a way to get iTunes to handle the new file. It’s not pretty, but unfortunately it’s something I’ve had to do more than once.
I’ll post a comment when it’s fixed.

Okay, give it a shot now. The feed’s been kicked, so the old file has been flushed and the new one should be there.

OK - so tell me your secret Summer, this happens to me about once a week now and drives me nuts!!! (I think Win32 iTunes is Steve Jobs way to get even with Windoze users)

From Dusk Till Dawn came out 11 years ago! Let’s hear what David has to say.

I’d love to leave voicemails with all the Farpoint shows. Alas, even when I had a phone, I couldn’t make long distance calls (I live in Colorado). Fact is, all the calls I amde to SoSF were made on my friend/co-worker Nate’s phone, and then only on nights we closed, and THEN only Slice because that’s the one we both listen to (Nate was the one who did the “are you sugesting lilipads migrate?” joke).
Now Nate’s got another job, and I’m still phoneless (thanks to my evil ex-roomate).

Arkle, you’re also welcome to record something, and email it in… that’s what some Slice listeners are also doing.

Oh recording is easy. I used Audacity to help me with my public speaking class this semester. The trouble is sending it. None of my e-mail accounts will let me send a message with an attachment that big.

Heard the podcast in my car on the car on the way to visit family. picked it up from Blockbuster when I got in town. Watching it for the 1st time now. Thanks for the suggestion.

Tangerine Dream did not do the theme music for the Terminator - Brad Fiedel did that. Tangerine Dream did do the music for that Knight Rider clone involving a bike (which I can’t quite remember the name of).

Philip–you thinking of Streethawk?

Arkle - Even Gmail??? That’s how I end up sending large attachments such as voice files. You might want to check and see.

Even gmail. When I recorded a Roundtable episode for The Ninth A Heroes Podcast Heroescast.com *ding* I tried to send through gmail and was told the file was too large. I had to upload direct to their file hosting account on, um, I forget what the name of it was. It wasn’t The Box.net, cause that’s the one I use for pictures. Anyway, they wer ekind enough to give me the username and password to upload diorectly, and then I had to do it from my college campus’s computers since for some reason just going to that site makes my home PC freeze. *shrugs*

I know I had two soundtracks done by Tangerine Dream, and I’d always assumed the second one was for Terminator.
Turns out, it was the soundtrack for Firestarter that I was thinking about all along.
I also forgot that they did the music for that Tommy Lee Jones HBO movie “The Park is Mine”.

Arkle,
how big was the file you were sending, because Tim Callender emailed in a file that was 18Mb for The Babylon Podcast, just last week using that gmail account!
I also think you can use YouSendIt.com for files up to 100Mb for free.
Comment by Summer — December 26, 2007 #
That could explain it. I think mine was over 40MB. It was last year when I did the Roundtable for the episode Landslide from Season 1.

Very much enjoyed the show on Near Dark, thanks.
For book shows, how about John Brunner (Shockwave Rider, Sheep Look Up), maybe Rudy Rocker or John Shirley?
Just a thought……….
Comment by bill2 — February 1, 2008 #
I meant Rudy RUCKER.
Sorry for the bandwidth wastage….
