Show #38: Pre-show Discussion
by SummerMay 8, 2008, 9:38 pm | In General |
Show #38 will cover “The Forever War” by Joe Haldeman.
Originally serialized in Analog magazine in 1972, it was first published in novel form in 1974, and it won the Nebula Award in 1975 and the Hugo Award in 1976.
The original story as read in Analog, and the first two versions of the novel contain an abridged and “more upbeat” version, different from the author’s original vision for the middle of the story. In 1997, the “Author’s Preferred Edition” was finally published, and comprises the first part of a trilogy, followed by “Forever Free” and “Forever Peace”.
A discussion topic will appear in the forums soon.

Great — a terrific book and worth plenty of discussion. We’re a long way away from Joe’s experience in Vietnam that inform the novel, but Iraq brings it all back again. (Actually Pres. Bush reminds me of James, Duke of York, brother and successor of Charles II. No political sense, couldn’t admit mistakes, and determined to continue with oppressive policies. I know that Bush wishes that he could dissolve Congress like James did Parliament. It all ended with the Glorious Revolution of 1688. But I digress…)

I have always loved this book and babied my paperback copy for nearly 30 years. Last year, my dog ate it. Yes, really. Teething Sheltie Dog got her fangs on it and now the cover is torn off and the edges are nicely loved.
Great book and it helped me keep my sense of humor throughout basic training. Always had a “Fuck you, sir” in the back of my mind.
