I have always loved this book and babied my paperback copy for nearly 30 years. Last year, my dog ate it. Yes, really. Teething Sheltie Dog got her fangs on it and now the cover is torn off and the edges are nicely loved.

Great book and it helped me keep my sense of humor throughout basic training. Always had a "Fuck you, sir" in the back of my mind.

Great -- a terrific book and worth plenty of discussion. We're a long way away from Joe's experience in Vietnam that inform the novel, but Iraq brings it all back again. (Actually Pres. Bush reminds me of James, Duke of York, brother and successor of Charles II. No political sense, couldn't admit mistakes, and determined to continue with oppressive policies. I know that Bush wishes that he could dissolve Congress like James did Parliament. It all ended with the Glorious Revolution of 1688. But I digress...)
