New York Times Science Fiction Book Reviewer

I'm incredibly pleased to discover that the New York Times has finally deigned to form a science fiction book review column. This is long overdue: Science fiction, as we all know, is just as valid a literary form as any other. The first review (link) is of David Marusek's Counting Heads. You may recall that [...]

Show #10: Pre-show Discussion

For Show #10, we head back to the film vaults and pull Ladyhawke off the dusty shelves.

A cult classic fantasy starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick, we have a tale of true love thwarted by dark magics, a power struggle between a Bishop and his former captain of the guard, and a journey where a brash thief becomes a reluctant hero.

TV News: Dark Skies

darkskies

It seems to be a new trend for older tv shows to show up on cable networks.

It looks like one of the Encore networks has begun airing "Dark Skies", the scifi-mystery series starring Eric Close and Megan Ward.

Show #9: Pre-show Discussion

I haven't investigated how much it'd cost to get this tank fixed, but I do happen to have another laserdisc player. I just hope it still works, or I'm going to have to jump through some hoops to find a replacement.

And yes, I would find a replacement. Laserdisc is the only media I have left for the original Star Wars trilogy in it's pristine original form.

Sometimes, the commercials are worth it

There was a MacGyver MasterCard commercial on the Super Bowl right now.

It was nice to see that Richard Dean Anderson can still do those MacGyver "I can't believe I just did that" facial expressions.

Show #8: Pre-show Discussion

We're diving back into the scary-fun world of 1980s television, and we're revisiting the supertech machines. That's right, we're going to talk about Knight Rider. Discuss amongst yourselves.

KAMN Survey: Info Dumps

A side discussion popped up between Jack, Mur, and myself about the use of infodumps in novels (especially the epic-length dumps of Neal Stephenson in Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon, and the Baroque Cycle).

This is probably a discussion for everyone to participate in.
